Blog Post – Socializing, Exercising, and Telemedicine for New Moms During COVID 19

When the state recommends staying at home, it changes how new moms access resources and support systems.  Fortunately, the digital age provides many different ways to keep in touch with those we rely on for advice and friendship.  Read on for tips to keep moving forward when it’s harder to get out in the community.

The first thing to do is connect on-line with your typical resources via social media.  The Upper Room in Derry, NH, local libraries, and area hospitals are active on Facebook and Twitter.  They often post links to articles and videos that are both fun and informative. Follow your favorites to make sure you don’t miss out on all they are offering.

Video chats via your phone or computer will keep you in touch with friends, family, counselors, and others who lend emotional support to you and your family.  Sometimes seeing a familiar face and feeling more like you’re actually with someone while you catch up, ask for advice, or vent your frustrations can improve your well-being. <https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/health-news/having-a-vent-buddy-is-good-for-your-health/ar-AABHW1t>

Finding time to exercise with a young child is hard enough, but during a pandemic, it’s even more difficult.  Gyms are opening up, but may not be offering childcare. And many of us still aren’t comfortable with the idea of working out at a public facility.  Fortunately, there are several Youtube channels available for all levels of yoga and exercise classes.  And with more moderate temperatures on the horizon, getting out for a walk is a great way to stay active.

Lastly, many doctors are cancelling non-essential appointments right now.  For a new mom, this can be a concern.  If you have questions, but can’t get face-to-face with your doctor, request a telemedicine appointment.  Most doctors will gladly call or video chat to answer your questions about breastfeeding, diaper rash, sleep problems, and even postpartum depression.

Things will eventually get back to normal. Developing a positive support community will help you grow during this time. If you’re interested in helping homeless mothers and new babies who face these risks, or are a mother in need of help yourself, please see our website stgiannasplace.org.  We’d love to hear from you.
